SAITM is here to stay – Kiriella Slams protests by doctors and others

Minister of Higher Education and Highways Lakshman Kiriella said that the government will never close the Medical Faculty of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM), no matter how many protests are carried out by doctors and others.

Kiriella made this remark during a meeting with the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero on Saturday (7). A draft of the new Constitution was handed over to the Prelate during the meeting. Speaking further on the SAITM issue, the minister said that it is the doctors and the medical students who are creating problems, and not the government. A Court ruling on the institute will be given in November. Therefore, everyone should respect the Court ruling and act accordingly, he added.

Kiriella said, “When SAITM was established, these people, the doctors, students and even Prof. Carlo Fonseka did not protest against it. Prof. Fonseka had a pro-SAITM opinion at that moment. But now these people want us to change the educational policies, according to their wishes. They should understand that it will not happen.” (MD)
