President returns from Iran

President Maithripala Sirisena and the Sri Lankan delegation have arrived in the island, concluding a two-day state visit to Iran.

The Lankan delegation arrived at the Katunayake International Airport at around 1.45 this morning.

During his visit, President Sirisena held bilateral discussions with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani.

During bilateral discussions, President Hassan Rouhani and President Sirisena had reviewed long standing bilateral relations in political, trade, economic and socio-cultural spheres.

Both leaders also held discussions in further enhancing the ties in the fields of oil, tea and tourism.

During his state visit, President Sirisena also held discussion with the Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution Khamenei had called for the expansion of ties with Sri Lanka and other Asian countries.

During the meeting with the President, the Leader of the Islamic Republic stressed that the Asian countries should expand cooperation in order to get stronger.

Sri Lanka and Iran also inked five memorandums of understanding covering various fields during President Maithripala Sirisena’s state visit to Iran.

The President’s Media Division said MoUs were signed to further strengthen in areas of Health, Medical Science, Pharmaceutical and Medical Equipment, Metrology, and Training, Combating illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs, Cinema and Television and Culture, Science and Technology.
