CMC Commissioner’s removal Workers to protest today

Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) workers have decided to stage a walk out today in protest against the ‘wrongful’ removal of Municipal Commissioner V.K.A. Anura. A collective of high ranking CMC officers told Ceylon Today that 17 trade unions will commence a protest in front of the Council in the morning today.

They claim that the Colombo Municipal Commissioner Anura was removed from office on false grounds and they challenge the administration to remedy it.
According to them, the Urban Development Authority had urged the Commissioner Anura to compile a list of bare lands, in Colombo, which could be utilized for UDA projects, but the Commissioner had refused on the basis that there was no functioning of the public council.

As a result, the CMC officers complain, the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Province Development and the Ministry of Local Governments and Provincial Councils had put the blame on the former Commissioner, thus removing him from service.
The CMC officers claim that the reason given for Anura’s removal was his inaction over the Meethotamulla incident. That reason was an utter farce.

Colombo Municipal Commissioner V.K.A. Anura was removed from office on Friday (2) on the basis of the report submitted by the Presidential Commission (PC), headed by retired Court of Appeal Judge Dr. Chandradasa Nanayakkara, that inquired into the damage caused to life and property due to the collapse of the Meethotamulla garbage dump.
