Diyatalawa grenade explosion Police question Army officer

The Staff Sergeant Major of the Army who is alleged to have been in possession of the hand grenade that exploded in a private bus in Kahagolla, Diyatalawa last week, has given a statement to the Police.

The Army officer, who had been receiving medical attention at the intensive care unit of the Diyatalawa Hospital since 21 February, was transferred to the general care unit yesterday (26) morning. Diyatalwa Police, investigating the explosion and fire, sent out a team of officers to record a statement from the recovering Army officer.

Army Spokesman Brigadier Sumith Atapattu said that the Police had recorded a statement from the officer and the Army’s six-member Court of Inquiry will also be visiting him to record a separate statement.

At least 19 individuals, including seven Army and five Air Force personnel were injured in an explosion and fire caused by a hand grenade, inside a private bus on 21 February.
