Ranjan ordered to reappear before SC

The Supreme Court yesterday (25) ordered Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake, who appeared before Court on contempt charges, to reappear on 21 November.

The Deputy Minister of Social Empowerment, Welfare and Kandyan Heritage was previously issued notice over a statement made in August criticizing the legal profession saying that most of the lawyers and Judges in the country were corrupt and bias. Two petitions were filed against him claiming that such views were defamatory toward the Judiciary, and would negatively impact public confidence in the legal profession and the Judiciary.

In a similar vein, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka has separately handed over documents to the Chief Justice calling for Ramanayake to be dealt with for being in contempt of Court.
