Missing girls surrender to Police Three charged with abduction

Three suspects, including the 19-year-old girl, reported missing with two other girls, were arrested upon surrendering to the Police yesterday (18).

Police Media Spokesman, SP Ruwan Gunasekara said two girls, 19-year-old Malithi Wathsala, the mother of an infant and 15-year-old Yasanthi Madushani, her sister-in-law surrendered to the Wellampitiya Police yesterday morning.

Subsequently, the 14-year-old Charithri Chandrasekaram had also surrendered to the Gampaha Police shortly after the two girls. According to the Police, the 14-year-old had surrendered to the Gampaha Police with a woman she had claimed to have lived with after she went missing. Gampaha Police had later arrested this woman too.

Wellampitiya Police had received a tip-off regarding the three girls prior to their surrender. The Police stated that Chandrasekaram (14) and Madushani (15) have been sent for medical examinations. Another 18-year-old boy, supposedly the boyfriend of Madushani, was also arrested.

Police said that all three suspects had been arrested on charges of abduction.

The three girls had left their homes in Orugodawatta to do some shopping at a nearby boutique before they went missing. However, the Police added that after the families of the missing girls lodged a complaint at the Wellampitiya Police Station on Monday (16), the 14-year-old girl (who was missing at that time) had contacted the 19-year-old girl’s husband the day before yesterday (17) morning and had asked him not to inform the Police that they had gone missing.

Wellampitiya Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
