Girl (15) rescued by cops from nightclub

The Welikada Police had, on 20 September, rescued, a 15-year-old girl from a nightclub. This girl, from a rural area, whose parents were duped by the suspect into allowing their daughter to accompany her for a wedding, had allegedly been taken to this nightclub and made to perform as a dancer, entertaining the patrons for several days.

Speaking to media, the Police said, that the minor had been escorted by a woman who had assured her parents that she was taking the child to a wedding. Instead, the suspect had taken the child to a nightclub in Ethul Kotte and utilized her as a dancer.

The girl was taken from her home in Dummalasooriya on 16 September. When the child hadn’t returned home, her parents had lodged a complaint on 19 September, the Police said. Furthermore, the Police added that in her statement to the Police, the child had said she was made to dance every night at the night club from 16 to 20 September.

“She has been rescued and returned to her parents,” the Police said, adding “We are awaiting her medical reports in order to determine whether she was sexually abused.”

While reports circulated that the child was made to dance in the nude at this night club, the Police said no evidence to that effect has been revealed thus far.

Meanwhile, the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) Chairperson Marini de Livera said that the NCPA too is looking into this matter.

“We have sent in an investigative team in order to gather the relevant facts,” she said, adding “We need to determine if this comes under child trafficking before we take further action.”

Two suspects, the woman and the owner of the night club were identified and arrested. (CD)
