No excuses for stealing Govt assets – Minister

No one has the right to misuse assets belonging to the government or the general public. Those who have stolen public assets have been interdicted, said Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister Fisheries, while on an inspectional visit to Embilipitiya at Mahaweli residential business office.

During his visit, he discussed ongoing issues in Embilipitiya Mahaweli Zone with relevant officers and stated that immediate actions will be taken after discussing these issues with President Maithripala Sirisena who is also the Minister for Mahaweli Development.

It is sad to mention that some who are involved in stealing government assets still live a luxurious life freely. But as a government, we will not let any politician or a government official who has misused government assets to escape. Law will work against them and they may be jailed for 7 to 8 years. We will take actions to regain these assets back to the government.

Some are questioning us, what’s taking so long to take actions against these people. We are still investigating people who are involved in these types of corruptions in both present and past government terms.

It is a judicial process and we as a government will not interfere in Court of Justice procedures. Also, I would like to mention that the investigations are taking place on Central Bank’s bond issue. As a government we will never protect thieves but will punish them accordingly he added.
