Politician behind prisoners’ killing?

Reports in the internet suggest that a politician is connected to yesterday’s killing of an underworld leader, four of his associates and two prison officers in a shooting on a prison bus in Kalutara.

The Facebook account of the underworld leader in question M.P. Aruna Damith Udayanga Pathirana alias ‘Samayan’ confirms that he had campaigned on behalf of a particular politician during the past elections.

However, police say their investigations point to the shooting as being a result of a long-standing dispute between two underworld gangs.

Police believe another underworld leader known as ‘Angoda Lokka’ to be behind the incident, which is under investigation by five teams.

The postmortem examinations of the seven shooting victims took place at Nagoda Hospital last night.

Police also found an abandoned cab, said to have been used by the assailants.

Could have been prevented
Meanwhile, prisons minister D.M. Swaminathan says in a statement that the attack could have been prevented had a police escort been given to the prison bus that was carrying underworld figures accused of serious crime.

He says police had informed that such protection could not be given due to a shortage of personnel.

At a media briefing in Colombo yesterday, former prisons minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera said such incidents could be expected due to the weaknesses of the administration.
