Tear gas and water cannon end march

IUSF and the MFSAC sources told Ceylon Today that the demonstration, which commenced from Colombo yesterday evening, was part of a series of protests against the recent Court decision in favour of the Malabe South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SATIM).

The protesting students, marching towards the Presidential Secretariat on Lotus Road, Colombo were met by the riot squad of the Police, which dispersed them by firing tear gas and high pressure jets of water. Meanwhile, the Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday (2) issued an interim order preventing 15 student unions and students from the Medical Faculty of the University of Kelaniya from engaging in protests or demonstrations in Colombo.

Police Media Unit said that the Magistrate’s Court ordered that any protest carried out by the students should not block the Colombo Fort Railway Station, Maradana Railway Station, the Presidential Secretariat, Temple Trees, Galle Face, Lipton Roundabout and the Ceramics Junction.
