Govt. in illegal deal with China – Dinesh
Joint Opposition (JO) Parliamentary Group Leader MP Dinesh Gunawardana alleged in Parliament yesterday that the government was attempting to hand over the Hambantota Harbour to the Chinese in an illegal manner.
The MP made these remarks while raising a question under Standing Order 23/2 in the House yesterday.
He said by giving ownership of the Hambantota Port to China, the government was violating the Port Development Bill.
“All ports and harbours in the country come under the Port Development Bill. The Ports were initially run by the Port Development Board (PDB) and later by the Port Development Authority (PDA).
The MP went on to charge that the current regime had neglected plans prepared by the previous government to develop the Hambantota region.
“They have abandoned the plans drawn up by the previous government to develop the area and instead intend to grab cultivation lands belonging to farmers for development projects.”
He went on claim that Government had attacked residents of Hambantota who had carried out a peaceful demonstration on Saturday and demanded that an independent investigation be conducted into the incident.
