Def. Secy. hits back at Prof. Wijesuriya
Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence has sent a letter of demand claiming a sum of Rs 100 million from the Convener of the National Movement for a Just Society (NMJS) Prof. Sarath Wijesuriya for having tarnished his public image.
When contacted by Ceylon Today, Prof. Wijesuriya stated that he had received a letter of demand last Friday from Hettiarachchi.
Defence Secretary Hettiarachchi when contacted said in the recent past the Convener of NMJS had made several derogatory statements regarding him thus tarnishing his image in the eyes of the public.
“He has claimed that I am a corrupt person. I have been engaged in the State service for over 40 years. If I had been corrupt, then I ought to have faced disciplinary issues, or even suspension from work etc. However, nothing of the sort has ever taken place,” he pointed out.
He added that if he were to further keep mum in the face of such diabolical lies concerning him being spread publicly by the NMJS Convener, then it would be akin to acceptance of charges being levelled against him.
In such a context he had decided to send a letter of demand to the NMJS Convener claiming damages for his false allegations.
However, Prof. Wijesuriya insisted that the allegations against the Defence Secretary were directed at him with facts.
“I made these charges through the media. If those charges were fabrications then he too had the chance to disprove them through the same formula. Instead, his threat to file legal action against me is an attempt to silence me, in my opinion,” asserted Prof. Wijesuriya.
He added that he was ready to face any consequences arising from the letter of demand.
