Int’l Cricket Stadium in Jaffna

maxresdefaultMinister of Sports Dayasiri Jayasekara informed Parliament yesterday that an international cricket stadium is to be constructed in Jaffna to develop the sport in the Northern Province.

The Minster said that a land area sandwiched between the A9 and A32 roads near Elephant Pass has been earmarked for this purpose.

His statement came in response to EPDP MP Douglas Devananda questioning him about the plan.

The minister said that the Sports Cum Swimming Pool Complex currently being constructed in Killinochchi for the children and youth in the Northern Province would be completed by August this year adding that the National Sports festival is scheduled to be held there.

The minister added that Rs 250 million had been allocated for the Killinochchi Sport Complex, adding that the 400M athletics track would not be completed in time for the Natioanl Sports Festival even though 70% of the track has now been completed.

“The construction has been assigned to the State Engineering Corporation but due financial problems, the allocated funds have been used to pay staff salaries and this will cause the delay in completing this project,” he said.

He added that following discussions with Minister Sajith Premadasa, the matter could be resolved and the construction could be expedited.”

He said the National Food festival will also be held there, parallel to the National Sports festival in Killinochchi as a step towards further social reintegration .

At the conclusion of the minister’s statement, MP Devananda thanked the minister for the steps taken to develop sports in the Northern Province.
